As a mentor you have the opportunity to greatly impact the lives of others, and since January is National Mentoring Month, we thought we’d share some insight about what makes someone a good mentor.
By definition a mentor is someone who teaches or gives help and advice to a less experienced and often younger person. Cannery Casino Resorts has many successful mentors who share the following qualities:
- A genuine desire to be involved with people
- Respect for those they are mentoring
- They’re active listeners and have the ability to empathize
- Our Cannery mentors also see solutions and opportunities for those they mentor
For instance, Cannery Table Games works with FIT, “For an Independent Tomorrow,” located in North Las Vegas. They take one individual at a time and train them to deal on Graveyard shift.
As they learn the games, that person may become an employee. Coincidentally, Tom Lettero, our COO, is on the Board of Directors of this organization.
Pictured from left to right are Cannery Casino Supervisors and successful program mentees: Joe Victa (Table Games Supervisor), Noel Baybayan (Table Games Supervisor) Jounghoon Lee, Montel Watson, Anne Nakai, and Andy Josafat (Table Games Supervisor)
Additionally, our Marketing Director, Holly O’Brien, spends time teaching Hospitality Marketing to juniors and seniors at UNLV, as well as mentoring public relations practitioners who are members of the Las Vegas Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America.
As you start to mentor someone you may be amazed how much you’ll discover about yourself. Often a mentor will say that they learn and grow as much as their mentee.
If you are willing to take the time to learn about your mentee, open to having fun while learning a few things about yourself, and excited to accept the challenges and rewards that come along with mentoring, then you are ready to change the lives of others by becoming a mentor.
